The Ridings are ancient administrative divisions of Yorkshire; these units are recorded as intermediate between the county and wapentake. There are three Ridings: North, East and West. The ninth century Viking invasions and tenth century re-conquest makes the origins of this unit more obscure, their inclusion in the Domesday Book suggests an earlier date of creation. Their functions were administrative and judicial.
